The Meaning of Arepo / Who's the one making up words now?
Poem in English, written at Poesiaeuropa 2023
I guess it means
I crawl?
I think it means
you want me to fall
to my knees,
begging the universe for some kind of glimpse of
the real reality
that turns in its empty,
empyrean majesty
to gaze on some
silly, dirty little creole boy
who you think thinks
by being gay
has somehow rid himself of entropy.
But two can play at inanity.
Two can ride the heart-lines
back to the source of eternity.
And you also forget:
I am a Dreamfisher par excellence.
The pride of Singapore’s new history
and the one they call queer Kristang icon
of the new Lion City.
So let’s make a game,
a rhyming scheme:
a name.
Arepu.
Ngua palabra Kristang nubu.
Ki eli sa signifiku?
Ngua jenti ki nadi tokah trumentezadu.
Ngua jenti ja olah
ngua mundu nubu.
Someone who could be me, and you:
someone who has found their pride
and has begun to individuate,
and say goodbye
to prison, and cage, and trap.
Someone who knows how to transform themselves and their world
into something completely new.
Arepu in Kristang
now means queer, and individuated,
and determined at all costs to seek knowledge and virtue.
Means someone who will never give up the fight
to know, and to live, and to reveal, and to be
the truth.
